Welcome to all new "Coldies" members
Here we hope to assist you with almost everything you need to know to enjoy your time at Cudgen Coldies.
We are a club that is designed to promote participation and fellowship. To get the most enjoyment out of your time with the Coldies you should be here at the Surf club at around 9.45 nearly every Sunday morning during winter and ready yourself for a swim in the ocean, starting at 10.00.
Make sure you keep a copy of our calendar handy, because there are special days during the year when different things happen. We encourage members to travel to carnivals held by other Winter Swimming clubs in the local area as well as attending our own Coldies Carnival.
The Top End Shield and the Aussie Titles are longer trips that provide many opportunities for fellowship. Talk to any of our long term members if you are interested in being a "travelling" member.
You nominate your time for the swim – the time you nominate must be in excess of 5 minutes. The course has 3 cans laid out triangularly, but swimmers make their own decision as to how many of the cans they go around.
The aim is to finish as close to your nominated time as possible. Don't try and wear a watch – you'll be fined if you do. Wetsuits and rash shirts can't be worn, but caps, goggles and even fins are OK. There is water safety present at all swims, so don't hesitate to put your hand up if you're in any difficulty – we don't want any false heroics !
After the swim we retire to the balcony of the Surf Club for a cup of home made soup (made by our members on a roster basis) – new members can join in straight away and get their names on the roster next season.
There is a brief presentation ceremony at around 11.00, preceded by a fine session – you can be fined a silver coin donation for wearing a watch or starting to eat your soup before the IRB (Duck) has been stowed away, or just for wearing the wrong coloured swimmers.
On each point-score day the winner is presented with a Coldie’s glass (filled at the bar for free) that is much sought after, not being available for sale.
After 11.00 some members have been known to stay on the balcony and drink a cleansing ale or two – sometimes well into the afternoon.
Please pay your subscriptions promptly - $10 per adult, $5 per under 18, or $20 for a family - and most importantly, you must be a member of the Surf Club itself to be in Coldies. Membership forms for Cudgen Headland SLSC Ltd are available from the bar.
A variety of styles of Coldies shirts are for sale at good prices and Surf Club swimmers (male and female) are also available.
Our main social activities are centred around our Coldie’s Ball, the Coldie’s Carnival and the Presentation Day, when the annual awards to members for various types of notable performances during the season are presented. You are guaranteed a good time at all of these activities.
We have a Notice Board in the kitchen area of the clubhouse, where all up to date info is put on display.
On behalf of the committee and members of Cudgen Coldies, it is our pleasure to welcome you to our club and wish you many good times whilst you are with us.
