Cudgen Coldies: “The Blue Swimmers”
The Cudgen Coldies is a winter swimming club formed 25 years ago to provide a means for surf life savers to maintain their fitness levels during the winter season and retain their summer friendships within the surf club.
The club now boasts over 80 members with an average of over 50 swimming every Sunday. The club encourages all members to take part including children, providing they are supervised by a parent. The swim commences at 10am every Sunday between May and September and concludes with a soup on the verandah of the club immediately after.
The beauty of this club is the fact that swimmers of any standard can participate. Each member selects their own time for a set course and the winner is the person who swims closest to their own time, regardless of how long or how short the time taken. A group have even deemed themselves the “Gutter Girls” (more like the Lipton Jigglers) and swim only within their own capabilities, ensuring that they do not have to be rescued. They also have to submit their times and have the same chance as better swimmers of winning the event.
Only two rules apply to this club and they are that you cannot wear a watch whilst swimming and that you must remain in the water for at least five minutes.
