Life Saving Education Courses

SLSNSWSurf Life Saving NSW is certified with the NSW Vocational Education and Training Accreditation Board (VETAB) as a Registered Training Organisation (RTO ID 90394).  In Australia, only Registered Training Organisations can deliver accredited training and must meet rigorous national standards to qualify for and maintain this registration.  The Cudgen Headland Surf Life Saving Club, in conjunction with Surf Life Saving Far North Coast and Surf Life Saving NSW offers a range of Life Saving Education Courses to assist in broadening your skill sets and to be better equipped to fulfil your role as a volunteer life saver.

Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC):

Pre-Requisites:

  • Candidates must be a minimum of 13 years old on the date of assessment
  • Have completed a 200 metre swim in five (5) minutes or less, in a swimming pool of not less than 25 metres, or over a measured open water course which will be observed prior to the candidate undertaking any water training or assessment activities, evidence of which must be provided to the Assessor on the timed swim form prior to commencement of the assessment for this qualification.

Bronze Medallion (BM) / Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue):

Pre-Requisites

  • Candidates must be a minimum of 15 years old on the date of assessment
  • Have completed a 400 metre swim in nine (9) minutes or less, in a swimming pool of not less than 25 metres, or over a measured open water course which will be Instructor assessed prior to the candidate undertaking any water training or assessment activities, evidence of which must be provided to the Assessor on the timed swim form prior to commencement of the assessment for this qualification.

IRB Crew Certificate (IRBC):

This course provides the opportunity for participants to develop the skills and knowledge required to be a safe and effective crew person in an inflatable rescue boat (IRB). The focus of this instruction is on specific learner and organisation requirements, including pre and post operational equipment maintenance, safe operating procedures, negotiating and performing rescues surf environment in an IRB. The course covers the skills required to participate in surveillance and rescue operations within the surf lifesaving environment either as a volunteer patrolling lifesaver or as a paid lifeguard.

Pre-Requisites

  • Candidates must be a minimum of 15 years old on the date of assessment
  • Hold an SLSA Bronze Medallion

Topics to be covered:

Roles and Responsibilities of IRB Crew Launching Operating and Recovering the IRB
Crew IRB to transport equipment and participate in rescues Post Operational Procedures

Silver Medallion (IRB Driver) (SM IRBD):

This course provides the opportunity for participants to develop the skills and knowledge required to be a safe and effective driver in an inflatable rescue boat (IRB). The focus of this instruction is on specific learner and organisation requirements, including pre and post operational equipment maintenance, safe operating procedures, providing leadership to the IRB Crew, negotiating and performing rescues surf environment in an IRB. The course covers the skills required to participate in surveillance and rescue operations within the surf lifesaving environment either as a volunteer patrolling lifesaver or as a paid lifeguard.

Pre-Requisites

Candidates must be a minimum of 16 years old to commence training Minimum of 17 years of age on the date of final assessment
Complete 10 hours post assessment experience as a crewperson Have met the Marine Licensing requirements in your state
Hold and be currently proficient in the SLSA awards shown below

Surf Life Saving Pre-requisite Awards:

Bronze Medallion AND IRB Crew Certificate

Topics to be covered:

Roles and Responsibilities of an IRB Driver Prepare and drive the IRB
Drive IRB to participate in rescues and perform emergency drills Post-operational procedures and maintenance

Advanced Resuscitation Certificate (ARC) and Defibrillation Certificate (DEFIB):

This course delivers knowledge and skills relevant to first aiders and first responders who have access to oxygen and defibrillation equipment to assist in the completion of their emergency care duties. The course has a strong focus on the practical implementation of the use of oxygen resuscitation and defibrillation equipment and also covers basic anatomy and physiology relevant to the use of this equipment.

Pre-Requisites

  • Minimum of 15 years of age on the date of final assessment
  • Hold the SLSA awards shown in the table below
  • Already achieved the units of competency shown below

Senior First Aid Certificate (SFA):

This course delivers knowledge and skills relevant to first aiders and first responders to provide assistance to the injured or suddenly sick. The course meets expectations for workplace first aider requirements. The course covers a broad range of illnesses and injuries and has a strong focus on the practical implementation of the skills required to treat a casualty prior to the arrival of medical aid.

Pre-Requisites:

  • Minimum of 15 years of age on the date of final assessment
