Cudgen go for it at SLS Championships

Photo: Harvie AllisonThe pinnacle event of surf sports, the Ironman, was staged on Sunday, 28 February, 2010 on Blacksmiths Beach, bringing to a close three days of tough state competition at the New South Wales Surf Life Saving Championship in the Hunter.

With a Tsunami warning in place along the NSW coastline, a number of precautions were taken by carnival organisers. The start of competition was delayed and organisers closed the water areas this afternoon for a half hour period, however there was no noticeable change in water levels.

Organisers and competitors were blessed with fair skies and moderate surf conditions for the carnival, which was staged over two successive weekends. The event attracted 8,000 athletes ranging in age from seven to seventy-six, representing 100 NSW surf life saving clubs from Bermagui in the south to Cudgen Headland in the north.

The Ironman and Ironwoman event, made up of swim, board and ski legs, attracted a sizeable crowd to the beach as five-time defending Ironwoman, Manly's Naomi Flood, attempted a sixth consecutive state title, which she won, writing herself into the Ironwoman history books once again with a wave to the beach at the end of the first leg on the board, then stretched the 20 metre gap to a 50 metre break during a power swim around the cans. With the crowd cheering her on, Flood cruised to shore on the ski, smiling as her team mates splashed her on the shoreline before an easy run up the beach.

Local Ironman Scott McCartney put in a great effort for the Cudgen SLSC by winning the Open Board in front of a strong field adding to his Branch, Inter-Branch and New South Wales Country Titles.
Other Cudgen winners were: Ben James who won on the board and Ben with Dylan Klein getting bronze in the board rescue. Mitchell James won silver on the board and younger brother Jarrod placed fourth in the 15 year division.
Russell Zahn won bronze in the Master's Ironman, and the Master's boat crew of Mark Buckman, Peter Quinla, Rob Blyth, Doug Fewtrell and James Blakeney won bronze.

Callum Smith came fourth in the 17 years surf race and sixth in the final of the belt, and Rohan Small came fourth in the Open belt.
This year's state championship, the largest surf sports event in the country, was the last to be held at Swansea Belmont as part of a three year agreement. Next year's championship will be staged at Cudgen Headland Surf Life Saving Club. For more information, visit the website at: www.cudgenslsc.org.au.

2011 State Championships at Cudgen Headland!

2011 State SLS Championships at Cudgen Headland SLSCCudgen Headland Surf Life Saving Club at Kingscliff has been selected by NSW Surf Life Saving as the host club for the 2011 and 2012 NSW Surf Life Saving Championships (with an option for 2013).

Mayor of Tweed Councillor Warren Polglase welcomed the announcement, which has the financial and in-kind support of the council.

"The Cudgen Headland Surf Life Saving is to be congratulated for their efforts in securing this prestigious championship event and taking on this challenge. We at Tweed Shire Council are the back room engine and we are fully supportive of their endeavours," he said.

"Tweed Shire is fully supportive of sports tourism and surf lifesaving is a healthy, active sport for young people and men and women of all ages.,"

Coastal councils in NSW were invited to submit an expression of interest to host the prestigious event and Tweed was selected over four other local government areas.

The NSW Surf Life Saving Championship is conducted over seven days and attracts more than 12,000 visitors per day, with around 8000 competitors of all ages taking part in one of Australia's largest surf lifesaving events.

"The event provides a significant economic benefit for the host region and is expected to give an $18 million injection into the local economy each year," Councillor Polglase said.

"I am sure the people of Kingscliff and the local businesses will get right behind this fantastic event."

President of the Cudgen Headland Surf Lifesaving Club Gary Cain said that he was confident that the club's many members and supporters would rise to the challenge of hosting such a large event.

"We'd like to thank Tweed Shire Council for their support so far and we look forward to working with them and the rest of the community to put on the best NSW Championships ever in 2011 and 2012 at Kingscliff Beach," Mr Cain said.

Tweed Shire Council voted at its 18 August 2009 meeting to provide financial and in-kind support to the event and endorse the allocation of $80,000 towards the first event.

This includes a $60,000 hosting fee and in-kind support with council works, equipment and operational services of $20,000.

Cudgen Medal Harvest

Cudgen Nippers Emily and Alice Hurt, from Fingal, Luke Gyory, from Kingscliff and Connor Smith from Banora claimed seven medals at the weekend’s NSW state championships. Photo: CRYSTAL SPENCERCUDGEN Surf Life Saving Club’s Emily Hurt cemented her paddling dominance at the New South Wales Surf Life Saving Championships at the weekend.

Emily was part of a small group of 18 youngsters from Cudgen SLSC who pitted themselves against thousands of the most talented nippers from across the state at the Swansea Belmont Surf Life Saving Club.

With the Cudgen SLSC set to steal the event from the Newcastle club as of next year, the nippers were out to prove they would be no easybeats on home soil in 2011.

The Tweed Coast club came home with a seven medals to the delight of proud club officials.

The five athletes who picked up the medals were also very happy.

Cudgen SLSC representative Jan Hurt said up to 240 kids competed in some events, making it no easy task to get a place on the podium.

“It is great for the club, especially considering we are going to host the state championships next year,” Mrs Hurt said.

“We are a small club so for that many kids to get medals against the big Sydney clubs is really good.”

Emily, who is Jan’s daughter, fared the best of the Cudgen brigade, defending her title in the girls individual board.

Competing in the under-10 division, she took an early lead in the final and never looked back, beating the other girls in a convincing performance.

Mrs Hurt said her daughter was very happy with the performance.

“She won the same event last year (in the under-9 years division) and it is always hard to back up and win again so she was fairly ecstatic to win again.”

Ethan Barr and Connor Smith put in a big performance, taking home two medals each.

Ethan was third in the under-12 year individual board and Connor was second in the under 12 year surf swim.

They then teamed up to place second in the under-12 year board rescue event.

The Cudgen athletes proved strong in the surf board riding, with two members picking up under-13 medals.

Luke Gyory secured a bronze and Alice Hunt took silver.

It was announced late last year that Cudgen Surf Life Saving Club had secured the rights to host the NSW Surf Life Saving Championships for the 2011 and 2012 summers.

There is a possibility that the state carnival time frame could be extended.
