SWIM

Swimming ability is a prime factor in surf lifesaving. SLSA Swimming events have been designed to encourage members to keep fit for lifesaving duties. Events include:

Surf Race – the Surf Race involves swimmers starting on the beach and then running, wading and swimming about 170metres to sea to round a set of buoys and then return to the beach. The event concludes with a run finish to the flags placed on the beach.

Rescue Tube Race – the rescue tube race is contested on the same course as the surf belt race. When the race commences the competitors must run up the beach to collect their rescue tube, turn and race to the water and swim to their allocated buoy to signal their finish of the race

Surf Boat

Our club has a proud history in surf boat rowing and our crews are known throughout Australia for their achievements. Since the 1950’s our surf boat crews have enjoyed exceptional success at all levels of competition. In marathon surf boat rowing our results is unequalled for consistency in the major events Australia wide. Boat crews compete in local carnivals, boat series carnivals which ultimately lead to the State, National & World Championship events.

Pool Rescue

Pool Rescue take us into aquatic centres around the country to test surf life savers and showcase a variety of skills involving swimming under obstacles, rescuing manikins in towing & carrying events, team relays. State & National Pool Rescue Championships are held in the winter months as key qualifying events for our national lifesaving teams. It is also an opportunity for our lifesavers to display the skills that keep them rescue ready for the start of the patrol season.

Beach

Beach Sprints – Sprints is an individual event where competitors sprint in lanes marked on flat, soft sand towards the finish line. The track is 70 metres for U8 – U14 and Masters and 90 metres for U15 – Open age.

Beach Relay – Teams of four run with a rubber hose as a baton. The baton is passed from member to member. The race is run on the same length course as the beach sprint, with the first team home with the baton the winner.

Beach Flags – Flags competitors lie face down in the sand and on the whistle jump to their feet, turn and sprint before diving for a rubber baton (the ‘flag’) in the sand. There is one flag less the number of competitors so one person is eliminated each round, and the last person is the winner. The track length is 15m for U8-U14 and Masters, and 20m for U15-Open

BOARD

Board Paddling is a very strong discipline within our club. Many new Bronze Medallion/Surf Rescue Certificate holders turn to board paddling as a natural progression from the skills they acquire during their award training. We have had board paddlers compete all over Australia and in all age groups from juniors to masters.

Ski

Individual competitors paddle a ski around a course of at least 300m from knee-deep water. Double ski competitors paddle approximately 50m further. Divisions for the single and double ski include Men’s and Women’s in Open, U19, U17 and Masters. The double ski is also conducted as a mixed men and women event in the Open division.
